Lower Back Injury

Our Joplin Chiropractor Provides Comprehensive Lower Back Pain Care Following Auto Accidents

At Skaggs Chiropractic, our Joplin chiropractor has extensive experience helping people find relief from their auto accident injuries, including lower back pain. Car accidents don't just cause whiplash and shoulder injuries, they often result in spinal injuries that can affect the back and entire body.

Types of Lower Back Injuries Experienced Following an Auto Accident

The spine is highly susceptible to injury during an auto accident, which imposes significant strain, tension, and abnormal movement on the body. Why? The spine is quite large, and made up of hundreds of intricately connected muscles, ligaments, tendons, bones, ligaments, nerves, and more. This means trauma can impact several parts of the spine both "upstream" and "downstream" from the original location of injury.

Consider some of these most common lumbar spine (lower back) injuries we see among our patients who have experienced auto accidents:

  • Lumbar disc herniation or bulge
  • Lumbar nerve compression (this includes the more general radiculopathy or the condition known as sciatica, or compression of the sciatic nerve)
  • Lumbar joint subluxations
  • Lumbar muscle strains and ligament sprains (muscles may also enter a reflexive spasm in protective response to an underlying disc or joint injury)
  • Lumbar vertebral bone fractures

The causes of these injuries are multifaceted. The acceleration and deceleration of the car in an accident (even minor fender benders!) can force the entire spine to bend forward and back quickly. This flexion/extension effect may be enhanced by the lower portion of your seatbelt, as this strap can become like a fulcrum over which your low back hinges.

Additionally, any sort of collision which causes the knees to jar into the dashboard can also alter the alignment of the pelvis and sacrum—the very base of your low back. Symptoms of these types of injuries may not show up right away—but you can still benefit from treatment during this asymptomatic phase.
