Headache

Headaches are not normal!  Just about everyone suffers from a headache once a while. The culprits causing headaches can be stress, toxic fumes, certain types of foods, preservatives, and alcohol.  Headaches are so common, some people think that getting a headache is just a normal part of life, but more than one or two headaches a month are possible indications that something is wrong.  A recent report on headaches reported that collectively in the United States alone, we consume 3.8 tons of aspirin each year at a cost of over $100,000,000.  Headaches are not the result of an aspirin shortage in the body!

Cervicogenic headache originates from disorders of the neck and is recognized as a referred pain in the head. Primary sensory afferents from the cervical nerve roots C1–C3 converge with afferents from the occiput and trigeminal afferents on the same second order neuron in the upper cervical spine. Consequently, the anatomical structures innervated by the cervical roots C1–C3 are potential sources of cervicogenic headache.

Cervical headache is often precipitated by neck movement and/or sustained awkward head positioning (such as painting the ceiling, or washing the floor) and can reproduced with pressure over the upper cervical or occipital region on the symptomatic side. It is often accompanied by restricted cervical range of motion, ipsilateral neck, shoulder, or arm pain of a rather vague non-radicular nature or, occasionally, arm pain of a radicular nature.

Persistent intermittent headache is a common disorder and is often accompanied by neck aching or stiffness, which could infer a cervical contribution to headache. However, the incidence of cervicogenic headache is estimated to be 14 - 18% of all chronic headaches, highlighting the need for clear criterion of cervical musculoskeletal impairment to identify cervicogenic headache sufferers who may benefit from treatments such as manual therapy.

The Chiropractic approach of treating headaches is to find the source of the problem, which is usually a vertebra that is slightly  dislocated (subluxation) in the neck or the upper back.  By restoring the normal position and motion, this reduces the irritation of the surrounding tissues and eliminates the throbbing headaches. Generally, the patient has instant relief from the head after an an adjustment.  Millions of Americans have found relief with chiropractic care. If a thorough examination reveals a vertebra being subluxated only a chiropractic adjustment can restore the proper position relieving the pressure on the irritated tissue.
