Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal Tunnel syndrome is a repetitive stress injury that typically results from making the same exact hand movements on a daily basis. This condition happens when the median nerve, a nerve that runs across your hand and through the narrow passageway on the palm side of your wrist, becomes compressed. It is an injury that is commonly a problem for office workers or anyone who routinely has to spend hours everyday typing or otherwise making repetitive movements with the wrists or fingers. Carpal Tunnel is typically characterized by a tingling sensation or numbness in the hand and wrist. If left untreated, the condition does tend to get worse over time.

The Symptoms/Pain Commonly Associated with Carpal Tunnel

In addition to the wrist pain, numbness, and a tingling sensation, people with Carpal Tunnel syndrome also tend to experience weakness in the hand. This hand weakness may result in the inability to hold onto items tightly. The fingers that are most commonly affected are the thumb, index, middle and ring fingers and the pain or numbness that people feel can sometimes travel all the way up the arm and even to the shoulder. The symptoms usually start out by being an intermittent bother but, over time, the numb, tingly feeling can become constant.

Common Causes/Reasons You Are Experiencing Carpal Tunnel

As mentioned earlier, one of the main causes for the occurrence of Carpal Tunnel syndrome is pressure on the median nerve due to repetitive movement of the wrist. Typically, though, there is more than one factor that brings the condition about. Certain medical issues or genetics can increase a person’s risk of getting Carpal Tunnel.  Women and the elderly are more susceptible to getting the condition, as well as people with diseases like diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, thyroid imbalances or kidney problems. In addition, heredity, obesity, and pregnancy are circumstances that could put you at a higher risk for getting Carpal Tunnel.

How Chiropractic Care Can Help You Treat and Manage the Pain

Chiropractic care deals with musculoskeletal structure and with realigning joints to relieve nerve pressure. Since the main reason for the occurrence of Carpal Tunnel syndrome is the constriction of the median nerve, a chiropractic adjustment can help to reduce inflammation in tissues surrounding the median nerve, thereby relieving the painful pressure or “pinching” feeling. Coaxing joints back into alignment and reducing inflammation also helps to increase the flow of blood and nutrients throughout the body, which, in turn, accelerates healing.
