Common Causes of Knee Pain

The knee is a complex structure that includes the joint, ligaments, muscles, and other soft tissues. Moreover, the kneecap – also known as the patella – is designed to “float” in the patellofemoral groove; it is an intricate design that allows the knee to move properly. It also adds another area that can easily be damaged.

As such, a wide variety of conditions and injuries can adversely affect its health and function. While some are permanent, others are reversible. Even a permanent issue causing knee pain can be made more bearable through chiropractic care to relieve pain and improve mobility.

Among the most common conditions causing knee pain are:

  • Trauma such as those experienced in a sporting, automotive, or slip and fall
  • Frozen Knee (also known as Adhesive Capsulitis)
  • Strains of the muscles or tendons caused by overstretching or tearing
  • Bursitis – inflammation of the sac of fluid that cushions the bones of the elbow (bursa)
  • Sprains due to a violent wrenching of the ligaments in the knee that causes inflammation and pain
  • Osteoarthritis and other forms of arthritis
  • Dislocated knee

Dysfunction in other areas of the body can also cause pain in the knees. This pain is known as referred pain and in the knees can come from problems in the joints of the lower body – Sacroiliac, Hip, and lumbar facet joints. It can also radiate from the muscles surrounding the knees and over the hips.
