How a San Francisco Chiropractor can help with knee pain

Knee pain is a common complaint for many people in the U.S. Athletes, non-athletes and people who work long hours at the computer often have knee pain.  It can happen with kids and adults.

How the knee works:

Your body is a machine that has connecting parts.  The knee works along the kinetic chain.  The knee is part of the lower kinetic chain.  This includes the toes, feet, ankles, legs, knees, hips, pelvis, and spine.  Knee pain doesn't always mean the knee is the cause.

There are also ligaments and tendons at the knee that need to be stable and moving correctly for the knee to keep stress and strain down.  Your body needs to move correctly so areas are not strained and stressed leading to inflammation and pain.

What are most people doing when they have knee pain?

It is recommended to do "RICE" when having knee pain.  This is for inflammation.  Elevating and putting ice on your knee can help but it is not the solution of what is causing the pain.  What is needed to make sure pain does not keep coming back is to find a solution to what is causing stress in this joint.

What type of medical doctor helps with knee pain?

Most of the time after seeing your primary doctor, visiting the urgent care or emergency room, it is recommended that patients see an orthopedic doctor.  These doctors work mainly with the musculoskeletal system.  Unlike chiropractors they do not manipulate or treat the joint. What they do is diagnose the problem and prescribe drugs or physical therapy.

If these treatments do not work, many times it is recommended to have surgery.  While this may help in some cases, in many it does not and changes the way our body moves.  Surgery also leaves scar tissue which needs to be addressed to make sure it is not inhibiting movement of the tissues surrounding the area.

How can a San Francisco Chiropractor help with knee pain?

Dr. Amie Gregory, DC, CCEP, ANF analyzes not only the knee but the surrounding areas of the kinetic chain to find out what areas may be over working or under working.  The knee is in the middle of the chain and is influenced by many different muscles and movements.  These are all looked at and addressed.  Then after this exam, the right treatment for you is delivered.  There is no "one size fits all". Everyone is different and requires different procedures.  This is not a quick fix like a prescription drug is but with time, the long term effects will lead to long term solutions without invasive treatments.

How does chiropractic benefit knee pain?

  1. The spine is always a factor with movement.  Addressing areas of stress and improper movement will help the rest of the body

  2. Our doctor is a specialist at extremity and sports manipulation and treatment.  Getting proper movement will relax the knee and help rebuild.

  3. Posture is helped with chiropractic.  This helps decrease stress of the joint and keeps down inflammation.

  4. Exercises can be given to help the body move better and heal faster
