How Chiropractic Care Can Help

Is an untreated sports injury keeping you on the sidelines? You do not need to be a professional athlete to benefit from chiropractic care for injury rehabilitation. Below, our Manhattan chiropractor answers five of the most frequently asked questions about sports injury rehabilitation and chiropractic care.

1. What type of sports injuries do you treat?

We treat musculoskeletal injuries including repetitive motion injuries, back pain, neck pain, leg pain, knee pain and hip pain. Athletes who compete in track, running or sports with a lot of stop and go movements may experience knee pain or shin splints. A shoulder dislocation or torn rotator cuff is common for baseball, tennis, golf and football. Poor training, faulty equipment or improper conditioning may cause other injuries. If you have recently sustained an injury while playing sports, or an old sports injury is “acting up” again because it never properly healed the first time, we can help.

2. Are chiropractors qualified to treat sports injuries?

Our chiropractors are trained in musculoskeletal injury diagnosis and treatment and also have a diverse background in sports injury rehabilitation. This means our chiropractic team is able to provide the most comprehensive care possible with specialized treatment that is tailored to your specific injury recovery needs. For example, our chiropractor Dr. Nichols is a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist. Dr. Roop is ART certified and works with the Kansas State University track team. Dr. Roop has substantial experience with trauma-related and overuse injuries. Dr. Beugelsdijk is a certified Kinesio tape practitioner.

3. What should I expect from chiropractic treatment?

The first treatment step is to identify the root cause for your injury or pain. In some cases, for example, pain is actually a symptom of a bigger problem affecting the body, such as a musculoskeletal misalignment. By diagnosing the root cause of your pain, our team is able to understand the full extent of your injury and provide a comprehensive pain management and rehabilitation program that is tailored to your specific needs. Our programs often combine chiropractic care with ART therapy and Kinesio taping protocols for maximum pain relief.

4. Will I hear a “cracking” noise during my treatment?

Sometimes during a chiropractic adjustment to a specific joint, a vacuum may be temporarily formed between joints filling with gas from the surrounding area. When the joint closes, the gas is forced out, causing a small popping or cracking sound. This is completely normal and no pain is associated with this noise.

5. What is Active Release Technique?

Active Release Technique, also known as ART therapy, is a movement-based massage protocol use to repair soft tissue and muscle damage. ART therapy is an effective treatment for knee pain, shin splints, tennis elbow and other pain associated with a sports injury.
