"We found that physical function in older adults predicts future cardiovascular disease (CVD) beyond traditional heart disease risk factors, regardless of whether an individual has a history of cardiovascular disease," senior author Kunihiro Matsushita, MD, PhD, Division of Cardiology, Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland, said in a news release.

This shouldn't be an eye opening theory that the less active you are in the "Golden Years" the more likely you are to experience heart troubles. But, it should be another nudge for you to get off the couch and stop rationalizing that you are entitled to do a lot of nothing because you earned it from years of work. Retired doesn't mean dead rather it means you no longer identify with the occupation that fed your family for years. Whether your movement comes from exercise or a part-time job, the fact remains you have to move.

For those not ready for retirement or who are just starting their adult phase, this study also pertains to you. Habits are hard to break but also hard to commit to especially as you grow older. It is never too early to develop good health habits.
