National Chiropractic Month: Conservative Care First!

October was a very significant month for all chiropractors as it was National Chiropractic Month. The American Chiropractic Association announced that the goal of National Chiropractic Month was to advocate conservative care first when treating back pain. We want to continue this important principle and remind everyone of the importance of chiropractic care. At our office in the Metro-Scottsdale-Phoenix area, we strongly believe in nonsurgical and non-medicinal treatments because they are less risky and less costly than the alternative. Our primary focus is reducing pain by keeping our patients healthy, and we offer many different services to that effect.

Surgical and Drug Treatment Facts

Invasive surgeries require long healing periods, leaving you without mobility and potentially increasing your pain. It is a good idea to visit your chiropractor first when you experience back pain in order to try and reduce your chances of requiring surgery. A released from the American Chiropractic Association points out that 42.7 percent of people who saw a surgeon or medical doctor first for their back pain ended up having surgery, compared to only 1.5 percent who saw a chiropractor first.

Additionally, a 2010 report from the Department of Veteran Affairs said that over 600,000 veterans took opioid painkillers as part of their treatment for musculoskeletal conditions. These drugs are highly addictive and have drastic side effects such as familial strife, job loss, homelessness, as well as health problems such as diabetes, weight gain, and heart disease.

Chiropractor Treatments for Back Pain

Typically, treatment from a chiropractor centers more on the individual patient and their overall wellness. Luckily, there are plenty of different options for such personalized treatment. These can include:

  • Spinal manipulation
  • Cold laser therapy
  • Acupuncture
  • Electrotherapy
  • Diet/lifestyle changes

Each of these treatments can stimulate healing functions in your spine and assist your back in getting the nutrients it needs to heal itself. They can be used to treat a number of different conditions including:

  • Back and neck pain
  • Headaches
  • Muscle, joint, or ligaments injuries or disorders
  • Nervous system issues
