.

What is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is a disorder that affects the plantar fascia.  This band of tissue supports the arch of each foot and stretches from the heel to the toes.

Our chiropractor notes that this condition, which occurs after strain on the plantar fascia, is the most frequent reason patients experience heel pain.  However, it might also develop when the body is at rest instead of involved in physical exercise.

Strain can cause the plantar fascia to swell, become inflamed, and/or tear.  Our patients consistently complain of sharp pain in the affected heel with each step they attempt.  Any stiffness and pain might decrease after they take few steps but could increase throughout the day.

The most common risk factors for this condition include:

  • Carrying excess body weight
  • Tight Achilles tendons or calf muscles
  • Flat feet or high arches
  • Sedentary lifestyle
  • Poorly fitting footwear
  • Extended time standing, walking, or running, particularly on a hard surface
  • Prior bone spurs
  • Feet that roll inward while walking

Scottsdale Treatment Options

Plantar fasciitis sufferers in the Scottsdale area can look forward to treatment options that encourage the body to heal itself without resorting to surgery or medication.  An initial consultation with our chiropractor includes a comprehensive physical examination and an evaluation of the individual’s symptoms, complaints, and health history.

Often a problem in a body part is due to misalignment within the spine.  Chiropractic adjustments restore mobility to joints affected by musculoskeletal alignment, whether from an auto accident, a degenerative condition, or other problem, and bring relief from pain.

While pressure from our doctor’s hand breaks up any fibrous lesions, stretches help the body to release lesions.  To release tightness and tension from the plantar fascia, a treatment plan might also include physical exercises, massage therapy, or both.  Some patients benefit from changing their footwear.
