What is a migraine?

Migraines are excruciating, throbbing, recurring headaches that usually concentrate around the sides of the head. They can debilitate the victim anywhere from four to 72 hours and are often (but not always) accompanied by nausea, dizziness, visual disturbances (such as “auras” before the onset of the headache) and extreme sensitivity to lights, sounds and smells.

What causes migraines?

Sudden constrictions and dilations in vessels supplying blood flow to the brain are behind the pain, but no one knows for certain what causes these fluctuations. Several factors seem to increase a person’s risk, however: gender (women suffer more often), genetics, whiplash injuries and poor posture for example. External triggers may include foods and drinks (aged cheeses, wine, beer, processed meats, caffeine, MSG, etc.), dehydration, irregular sleep habits, smoking and high stress levels just to name a few.

How are migraines diagnosed?

People who suffer from the aforementioned symptoms should call Dr. Daniel Secrest, DC for a full medical evaluation. He will discuss your symptoms in depth and also evaluate whether or not spinal misalignments, particularly in the neck, are pinching nerves that affect blood supply and muscle tension.

How are migraines treated?

Many people turn to painkillers for help, but these are only temporary solutions that do not address the deeper issues. At Secrest Family Chiropractic, we provide highly effective treatments that lessen the severity and frequency of migraine attacks—for many patients, migraines are even fully eliminated! Dr. Daniel Secrest, DC uses specific, gentle chiropractic adjustments to realign out-of-place vertebrae, which releases pinched nerves so they can communicate properly with the brain. Since nutrition, lifestyle and stress all play a role, we also provide support and counseling in these areas as well.

Can a chiropractor treat migraines?

Yes! Strong evidence points to nerve interference as a major factor behind migraine attacks. When cervical vertebrae are out of proper alignment, several critical nerves can be pinched and cannot direct the body properly. Chiropractic care is designed to remove nerve interference, which usually minimizes and resolves migraines.

What should I do if I have a migraine?

Keep a journal of your environment, stress levels, sleep and diet that occurs before the onset of a migraine. You will probably notice triggers and patterns. Bring this in with you when you see Dr. Daniel Secrest, DC.

How can I prevent migraines?

Avoid your migraine triggers. Keep a regular sleep and nutrition schedule and reduce stress wherever possible. Come in for a postural evaluation to see if nerve interference is an issue. Please call us today at (480) 994-4411 to schedule an appointment!
