Concussion

Concussion Treatment with our Scottsdale Chiropractor

Concussions are a type of brain injury that often occurs when you receive a blow to the head or from violently shaking the upper body. The most common reasons many people visit Secrest Family Chiropractic for the treatment of a concussion are the result of a car crash and injuries that were sustained during contact sports, such as football or hockey. In the United States, there are millions of sport-related injuries each year; in fact, many schools now require concussion screenings before an athlete may register for contact sports in Scottsdale. Unfortunately, unless there is a loss of consciousness with a concussion, the injury often goes unreported, especially after an automobile accident and athletes. If the results of a concussion go unnoticed, the results can have long-term effects.

Symptoms of a Concussion

Children and teens are often more likely to get a concussion and may take longer to recuperate than adults. People react to a concussion in different ways and some do not exhibit immediate symptoms, but most will notice some of the following symptoms within 72-hours after the initial trauma:

  • Confusion
  • Unsteadiness
  • Dizziness
  • Fogginess
  • Vertigo
  • Headaches
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Vision problems
  • Nausea
  • Neck and upper back pain

Chiropractor Care for a Concussion

One of the most important reasons to visit a chiropractor in Scottsdale following a concussion is for the secondary injuries that are often sustained when the concussion occurred. For example, secondary injuries may include whiplash, muscle sprains, strains, and neck, should and/or back pain can all be the result of a concussion-causing event. In many situations, these secondary injuries are overlooked, but they must be addressed immediately in order to heal. Chiropractor treatment often includes massage therapy, joint mobilization, exercises and balance re-training. However, depending on the specific injuries, chiropractic treatment may also include spinal adjustment, ultrasound and or laser techniques.

Because the injured area in the case of a concussion is at the skull and/or upper cervical spine, your chiropractor will do a thorough examination to determine the specific damage caused by a secondary injury; testing may include X-rays in order to determine the extent of the damage to the cervical vertebrae. Damage to this area can cause extremely painful headaches, serious problems to the spine and prolonged pain in your neck and upper back. In most situations, a concussion will quickly resolve itself, with all symptoms completely resolving in about 10 days or less.
