Shoulder Pain FAQ

Too many patients come to Secrest Family Chiropractic in Scottsdale with severe shoulder pain. The joint is supported by the surrounding muscles, ligaments, and tendons that are very susceptible to injury. Any movement of your arms can cause friction within the shoulder, thus causing discomfort and chronic pain. Understandably, a majority of our patients have questions about their condition. We have gathered some of the questions that we run into regarding shoulder pain.

.

What are the Common Causes of Shoulder Pain?

Often, the most common cause of shoulder pain is a dislocation of the humeral head inside the shoulder's socket. Whether it is a partial or a complete separation will determine the severity of the injury. Other shoulder conditions include a tear of the labrum, stiffening of the shoulder joint, muscle strains, ligament sprains, bursitis, and tendonitis. All of these conditions will restrict the range of motion in the joint, which often causes stiffness and pain in the area.

What are the Most Common Symptoms of Shoulder Pain?

The most common symptom of shoulder pain is the limited range in motion in the shoulder joint. Often, the sudden movement will cause immediate pain if the joint is moved in a certain direction. Another common symptom includes a person being unable to lie on their shoulder for long periods. If the condition is left untreated, they will have trouble with simple everyday tasks like dressing themselves, reaching over their head to grab something, and lifting certain objects. Over time, the shoulder pain will become sharp or dull with numbness throughout the arm and hand.

How Can Chiropractic Care Relieve Shoulder Pain?

If your initial exam shows a misalignment in the shoulder, then the condition can be helped by a chiropractor through a series of chiropractic adjustments to the area. This course of treatment will help to restore normal alignment of the shoulder. The goal of the chiropractor is to stabilize the joint. Another chiropractic care technique that may be needed is corrective exercises that heal and strengthen the surrounding muscles of the shoulder.

What Other Tools Are Used When Treating Shoulder Pain?

Many of our patients as well as professional Olympian athletes have found pain relief from kinesiology taping. Kinesiology tape can improve the circulation of vital nutrients in and around the shoulder to expedite the healing process. This valuable tool can reduce inflammation in various areas of the body while providing needed support for simple daily tasks or vigorous sports activities.
