Scoliosis Pain

Do you or someone you care about suffer from scoliosis? At Anderson Chiropractic, a chiropractor in McMurray can help you out. Below is more information about scoliosis and scoliosis pain management.

What Is Scoliosis?

Scoliosis is a condition where the backbone slightly curves to the side of the patient. A spinal curve of more than 10 degrees is considered scoliosis. The spine of a person suffering from scoliosis may look like a "C" or "S" shape. Patients with scoliosis may lean slightly or have uneven hips or shoulders.

What Causes Scoliosis?

In about 80% of cases, doctors cannot find any direct cause for scoliosis. The two types of scoliosis that do have causes are structural and nonstructural scoliosis.

In structural scoliosis, the spine's curve is rigid and cannot be undone. Causes of structural scoliosis include infections, cerebral palsy, tumors, genetic conditions such as Down syndrome and Marfan syndrome, muscular dystrophy, and birth defects.

Nonstructural scoliosis is where the spine looks curved, but it works fine. Nonstructural scoliosis is caused by muscle spasms, the legs being different lengths, and severe inflammation. This kind of scoliosis can go away when these conditions are treated.

Back Pain and Scoliosis

Since scoliosis causes the spine to curve, this condition often causes a person back pain. Chiropractic care can help relieve back pain associated with scoliosis.

What Is the Treatment for Scoliosis?

Chiropractic care, such as adjustments, can help lessen the back pain from scoliosis. Gently realigning the back and neck can take pressure off of muscles, tendons, and other soft tissue, bringing pain relief to these areas of the body.
