Herniated Disc

Understanding Herniated Discs

A herniated disc is often the source of chronic back pain or neck pain for patients we see at Anderson Chiropractic. An evaluation by our chiropractor, Dr. Scott Anderson, can help pave the way for a treatment plan that offers natural relief. Dr. Anderson is trained in various chiropractic adjustment techniques to effectively reduce pain or discomfort caused by herniated discs. Our team at Anderson Chiropractic in McMurray can provide the care you need to live free of back pain and discomfort.

What Causes Discs to Herniate?

The discs in the vertebrae act as cushions and help absorb shock to the spine. As a result, a disc is more likely to slip or bulge out of place. This frequently occurs in the lumbar area of the spine but can also happen in the cervical spine.

Common causes of a slipped or herniated disc include back or neck injury, strain from lifting heavy objects, excessive weight, or sitting for long periods. However, the problem is more often linked to age-related changes. As you age, the tough exterior of the disc degenerates and can break or tear more easily. The jelly-like material inside the disc may also leak out into the spinal canal and irritate or compress the spinal nerve. Unlike herniation, a bulging disc protrudes but does not break and is less likely to inflame the nerve.

Herniated Disc Symptoms

Sometimes the disc heals on its own and may not cause symptoms. However, it's still important to schedule a consultation with our chiropractor for a thorough diagnosis. Pain may radiate to the shoulder, arm, hand, or leg depending on if the herniated or bulging disc is located in the neck or lower back.

Patients may experience nerve pain (neuropathy) if the disc is pressing against a nearby nerve. For example, a compressed sciatic nerve in the lower back may result in sciatica. This condition causes chronic lower back pain or sharp shooting pain that radiates down the leg. Numbness, tingling, or leg weakness are also symptoms of pressure on the nerves. In addition, bladder or bowel dysfunction may occur in severe cases of nerve root compression.

Herniated Disc Diagnosis and Treatment

We will conduct a physical exam and evaluate your medical history to form a diagnosis. Additional tests like x-rays or MRIs may be required for further evaluation. Once we find the source of your pain or discomfort, we will create a treatment plan customized to your unique needs.

Spinal adjustment is a primary non-surgical treatment option for a herniated disc. Dr. Anderson performs adjustments to help restore the spine's structural integrity, correct nerve dysfunctions, and improve herniated disc symptoms. In addition, the treatment reduces inflammation, promotes spinal flexibility, and enhances overall wellness.

Complimentary non-invasive therapies include spinal injury rehabilitation, cold laser therapy, and stretching and strengthening exercises to maximize healing. We also provide nutritional counseling, which aims to improve spinal health.
