What is Sciatica?

Sciatica occurs when one (and rarely both) of your sciatic nerves become pinched and irritated by something near where it exits your spinal cord in your low back. This "something" that usually leads to the nerve compression is usually a narrowed joint, a bony cyst, or a bulging or herniated disc.

Your sciatic nerves are the largest nerves in the body and provide motor and sensory information to the legs.

Who Gets Sciatica?

Sciatica seems to be more common among people between the ages 30 to 50, although it can happen to men and women at every age. Risk factors for sciatica include slips, falls, and other traumatic accidents, pregnancy, frequent heavy lifting or bending, sitting for a long time, and certain other chronic health conditions including obesity and diabetes.

What Are the Signs and Symptoms of Sciatica?

Signs and symptoms of sciatica can be mild, moderate, or even debilitating in some cases. Most people notice sharp, shooting, burning, or tingling pain in one leg that can go all the way to the foot. If there is enough compression of the sciatic nerve, a person may also notice weakness in a foot or diminished reflexes. Low back pain and stiffness is also possible.

Can a Chiropractor Treat Sciatica?

Yes! A chiropractor is trained to treat sciatica. At our clinic in McMurray PA, Dr. Anderson uses a range of non-invasive techniques shown to decrease pressure on the sciatic nerve root, reduce inflammation, prevent recurring issues, and alleviate symptoms, as well. He uses techniques and services such as chiropractic adjustments, non-invasive spinal decompression, corrective core stability exercises, nutritional counseling, and postural re-education and body mechanics training. All these techniques are custom-tailored to meet the needs of the specific patient. Since no two bodies are the exact same, no two treatment plans are the exact same, either.
