What Is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is a condition that causes foot pain due to abnormal stress and tension within the plantar fascia, which is a thick band of tissue running along the underside of your foot. This inflammatory condition develops gradually over time, and may be caused or exacerbated by several factors, including prolonged standing, obesity, inadequate arch structure (too high or too flat), inward rolling of the foot during gait (called hyperpronation), bone spurs, and a sudden increase in level of exercise, or, conversely, sedentary behavior.

Top 4 Signs & Symptoms Of Plantar Fasciitis

There are several causes of foot pain, many of which are briefly discussed below. That said, there are a few key signs and symptoms that typically present with plantar fasciitis:

  1. Pain is felt in the bottom of the foot and around the heel.

  2. This pain is often described as sharp or stabbing.

  3. Pain is worse when stepping on the foot after a prolonged rest period, and especially the first thing upon waking. It also tends to be worse following exercise and may come on after an excessive time spent standing or walking.

  4. Pain is worse when the toes and foot are bent up toward the shin.

The exact duration and severity of symptoms will vary depending on the person. One or both feet can be affected.

How Is Plantar Fasciitis Diagnosed?

Diagnosis is typically made based on a thorough physical exam and complete patient history questionnaire. In some cases, ultrasound imaging may also reveal signs of tissue inflammation and damage associated with plantar fasciitis.

It's been estimated that up to 80% of heel and foot pain is caused by plantar fasciitis. Other causes of heel and foot pain--all of which also respond positively to chiropractic care--include arthritis, tendonitis, metatarsalgia (mid-foot pain caused by overuse or loss of protective fat cushioning), and tarsal tunnel syndrome (lower leg nerve entrapment).

How Can A Chiropractor Treat My Plantar Fasciitis?

There are several specific techniques a chiropractor can use to treat plantar fasciitis. These include:

  • Therapeutic massage, including the Active Release Technique (ART): used to stimulate blood flow, relieve tension in strained connective tissue, and reduce adhesions and scarring, massage and soft tissue mobilization is especially effective at easing the pain and stiffness associated with plantar fasciitis

  • Corrective exercises and stretches: these are useful for reducing tension and adhesions within the plantar fascia, and can help build up the supporting strength of the muscles within and near the foot

  • Cold laser therapy and infrared therapy: these non-invasive modalities stimulate tissue healing and reduce inflammation, swelling, and pain

  • Postural analysis and body mechanics training: Dr. Anderson can assess your posture at work and during exercise, helping you identify (and correct) movement patterns that may be contributing to your symptoms
