Whiplash is a term used to describe neck pain as the result an injury to the soft tissues of your neck (specifically ligaments, tendons, and muscles). It is caused when abnormal force is applied to your neck that causes movement beyond its normal range of motion. Whiplash happens in many forms such as car crashes or motor vehicle collision, as well as during sporting events, falls, and possibly even during an assault.
Whiplash Causes
The most frequent cause of whiplash is an automobile accident. The amount of physical damage to the car may not relate to the intensity of neck injury sustained; speeds as low as 10-15 miles per hour can produce enough force to cause whiplash in automobile accident victims, whether they were wearing their seat belts or not.
Other common causes of whiplash are contact sport and blows to the head due to a falling object or from being assaulted. Repetitive stress or chronic strain involving the neck (such as using your neck to hold the phone) are also common, non-acute causes.
