Lower Back Pain

Lower back pain can be debilitating. Pain in the lower back can make it painful to sit, stand, twist, and lift heavy objects. There are several causes of lower back pain and fortunately, most can be treated by our chiropractor at Infinite Healing Center in Mesa.

.

Muscle Sprain or Strain

The most common causes of lower back pain are muscle sprains and strains. A strain occurs when you have stretched the muscle too far and it tears. These injuries are commonly a result of lifting heavy objects, falling, and playing sports.

Herniated Disc

A herniated disc occurs when the jelly-like center of the lumbar disc breaks through the outer layer. When this happens, it can irritate the nerve roots nearby, which can cause severe lower back pain. There are a few risk factors that can increase your chances of suffering from a herniated disc. These include:

  • Being overweight or obese
  • Working a job that requires repetitive pulling, pushing, lifting, twisting, or bending sideways
  • Smoking
  • Genetic predisposition to disc herniation

Spinal Stenosis

Spinal stenosis occurs when the spinal canal narrows where the nerve roots are located. The pain can be felt at a single level or in multiple levels of your lower back.

Sciatica

Your sciatic nerve runs from your lower back, through your buttocks and hips, and down each leg. When this nerve is compressed, it can cause a sharp pain that radiates through the sciatic nerve. This condition often occurs as a result of a herniated disk or spinal stenosis. It can also occur due to a bone spur on the spine or changes in your spine due to age.

Trauma

A fractured or dislocated spine can cause severe pain in the lower back. If you are involved in a motor vehicle accident, or if you fall and are in a great deal of pain, you must seek medical treatment. If your spine is fractured or dislocated, you will need treatment to prevent permanent damage.

Compression Fracture

Compression fractures occur in the cylindrical vertebra and they are caused when the bone caves in on itself. This type of fracture can cause pain in the lower back. The most common cause of a compression fracture is weakened bones due to osteoporosis. You can also get a compression fracture from a car accident or sports injury.
