A pinched nerve occurs when something, such as a bone or muscle, presses against a nerve. The pressure can disrupt the nerve’s function and cause symptoms. In some cases, the symptoms of a pinched nerve can prevent you from going to work, attending to school, or taking care of your family.

The medical term for a pinched nerve is radiculopathy. Cervical radiculopathy is a pinched nerve in your neck that causes pain and tingling in your neck and arms. Lumbar radiculopathy is a pinched nerve that causes pain your lower back. You can even get a pinched nerve in your chest, known as thoracic radiculopathy, which causes you to feel like you have a tight band around your chest.

How to Determine if You Have a Pinched Nerve

Assess your symptoms. You may have a pinched nerve if you experience pain, numbness, weakness or tingling in one part of your body.

Note the location of your symptoms. You may know it is a pinched nerve by the location of your symptoms. A pinched nerve can develop in one or more sites throughout your body. You might get a pinched nerve in your wrist, a condition known as carpal tunnel syndrome, to cause pain and numbness in your fingers. A pinched sciatic nerve in your back can result in sciatica, which is pain that runs down one of your legs, although symptoms can affect both legs in some cases.

Consult with any of our chiropractors and undergo an exam. Chiropractic care can provide pain relief and alleviate other symptoms resulting from pinched nerves.
