Understanding Degenerative Disc Disease

Your spine is made up of several interconnected bones called vertebrae. Between each vertebra, there is a gel-like pad called a disc. The disc is designed to be a shock absorber and protects the bones so that they do not touch or grind together. The disc also protects the sensitive nerves that are found in the spinal column.

This soft pad can start to dry out with age. This can cause a bulging disc or cracking of the disc. In severe cases, this can result in a herniated disc, which occurs when the disc has completely ruptured. This condition can cause symptoms such as severe back pain, numbness and tingling in the legs, and weakness in the leg muscles.

Degenerative Disc vs Arthritis

Many people mistake arthritis of the spine with degenerative disc disease. It is important to note that these are two very different conditions. Arthritis is a condition in which the joints and the connective tissues of the joints become chronically inflamed, causing pain and mobility issues as well. With arthritis, however, the discs of the spine are not damaged. Many of the chiropractic treatments which can help with degenerative disc disease are also helpful for arthritis of the spine. Our chiropractor will assess your musculoskeletal system to determine the location and severity of your disc issues before creating a chiropractic care plan to treat them.

Our Chiropractor Can Help

If you have degenerative disc disease, or if you have sustained a disc injury, chiropractic care can help. The treatments available can help to relieve the discomfort that is caused by a damaged disc. Regular spinal adjustments can also help to re-align the vertebra of the spine. This will relieve the pressure that is on muscles, tendons, and nerves. Spinal adjustment is an important type of foundational spine treatment that helps relieve symptoms of many different types of conditions. You can also ask our chiropractor if massage therapy can be incorporated. Massage therapy helps to relieve the tension in the surrounding muscles so that the spine can start to heal.
