What is TMJ?

The temporomandibular joint is a hinge that connects your jaw to the temporal bones in your skull and allows you to move your jaw so you can talk, chew and so on.  When this joint is damaged or deteriorates the result is a painful condition known as TMJ.

Symptoms and Causes of TMJ

Your jaw can fall under attack from a variety of sources including injuries and alignment issues. Your vertebrae may erode and move out of alignment. Various form of arthritis can damage the joints cartilage - including rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. If you clench or grind your teeth, you may irritate your jaw and lead to TMJ. When your spine is misaligned, it can pinch a nerve that controls your jaw and causes TMJ. Other possible causes of TMJ include injury to your teeth, poor posture, stress, and gum chewing.

While symptoms will vary from one person to another, they may include:

  • Pain and inflammation in your jaw
  • Difficulty chewing and talking
  • Headaches
  • Neck pain
  • Dizziness
  • Tinnitus
  • Toothache
  • Clicking or popping noises when moving your jaw
  • Pain in the temple area
  • Earaches

How Can a Chiropractor Help?

TMJ treatment from a chiropractor can include evaluating and adjusting your spine to remove pressure from nerve roots to relieve pain. A chiropractor can also adjust your jaw to reduce pain and restore mobility. Another chiropractic TMJ treatment is massage therapy to relieve muscle pain and stiffness and reduce stress. Yes, stress can contribute to TMJ. Since some foods contain anti-inflammatory properties, your chiropractor may provide nutritional counseling as a TMJ therapy. Finally, your chiropractor will recommend homeopathic therapies in lieu of drugs. Drugs offer only temporary relief and do nothing to solve the problem. To that end, your chiropractor may advise you to do some things at home to aid in your recovery. Some home therapy techniques include jaw exercises, relaxation techniques, and application of moist heat and ice packs.
