A recent study has led doctors to the conclusion that sitting for more than 3 hours a day can actually heighten risk factors for diabetes, heart disease, and stroke. These doctors are dubbing this new discovery as “sitting disease.” Sitting for long periods of time “doesn’t mean you’ll die earlier, but it increases the risk” according to Dr. Peter Katzmarzyk, lead author of the study.

Ask yourself what you can do to increase your health and activity daily. First, stand up at work when you are on the phone or ask your boss if you can have a standing work station. This could take anywhere from 2 to 8 hours of sitting a day out of your daily routine! Second, turn off the TV or find ways to be active while watching television shows. Even doing something as simple as standing while you fold the laundry or do the dishes can help decrease the number of hours you are sitting daily. Third, find reasons to move! Even just getting up and moving 10 minutes of every hour can help increase blood flow. For example, walk to a colleague’s desk to speak with them instead of sending an email.
