Overview of Herniated Discs

Every person’s spinal column consists of a number of structures.  Discs between spinal bones consist of a soft center covered by a hard surface.

Herniated discs can develop when events such as injury or even aging occur.  The actual herniation occurs when the soft material filling the center of a disc manages to push through a break in its hard covering.  Other common names for the same condition include a slipped, bulging, or ruptured disc.

Herniated Disc Symptoms

While some patients do not experience discomfort, this is unusual.  Many report considerable pain and other discomforts.

When herniation develops in a neck disc, the site of pain is most often in the shoulder or the arm.  With a herniated disc in the lower back, pain typically occurs in the buttocks, thigh, or calf.

Some individuals report back pain, tingling, or numbness.  A herniated disc can also affect nerves linked to muscles.  When this occurs, patients sometimes experience muscle weakness that causes them to stumble or drop items.

Chiropractic Treatment Options

A common belief that chiropractic treatment is ineffective or too forceful to relieve discomfort from herniated discs is incorrect.  Chiropractors use only natural treatments that avoid medication or surgery to foster wellness.  The focus of chiropractic is finding the cause of each problem and eliminating it rather than merely trying to resolve symptoms.

At an initial consultation, our chiropractor conducts a comprehensive exam, reviews the patient’s health history, and discusses symptoms and complaints.  The exam includes noting any muscle wasting, reflex problems, or nerve sensation issues.

Each diagnosed patient receives a treatment plan customized to his or her needs.  Sometimes the plan includes a combination of options.  Gentler chiropractic therapies such as flexion-distraction and non-surgical decompression are ideal for achieving relief from herniated disc problems.
