Most people have heard of “whiplash.” It is usually associated with the injuries caused by one vehicle colliding with another but can also occur in a football game or diving off of a high diving board. Whiplash is an injury to the soft tissues of the neck. The soft tissues are the muscles, nerves, ligaments and discs in and around the bones of the neck. It occurs when there is a sudden jerking of the head. It causes strain on the muscles and ligaments of the neck, causing the neck to move beyond its normal range of motion. Many people feel pain and stiffness in their necks in the first few days following an accident. This can sometimes cause headaches, fatigue, dizziness, and pain between the shoulder blades. It can also cause irritation to the lower neck, causing numbness and tingling in the hands.
