When hearing the phrase “Carpal Tunnel Syndrome,” many of us think of spending too much time typing or writing. The reason for this is that Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is common in people who perform repetitive motions of the hand and wrist. Poor positioning of the wrist causes compression of the median nerve. This is why people with Carpal Tunnel experience numbness, tingling, weakness, and difficulty gripping items. The following methods are most used by chiropractors in treating CTS: manipulation of the wrist, elbow, and upper spine; ultrasound therapy; and wrist supports.

In a recent study at the University of Maryland Medical Center, chiropractic treatment has been proven equally effective to modern medicine in treating Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. In a comparison of chiropractic care and conservative medical care (ie: wrist supports and anti-inflammatory medicines), both groups experienced improvement in finger sensation, nerve function, and comfort. Another study involving only chiropractic treatment resulted in patients noting significant improvements in range of motion, strength, and pain.

Most people’s symptoms will clear up within a few months when they receive treatment. Advanced stages of CTS can become very serious with symptoms such as muscle deterioration, loss of sensation, and even permanent loss of function. If you start to experience any of these symptoms, call your Raleigh chiropractor for a free consultation to see how chiropractic care can help you.
