I’m sure you remember your mother telling you to “Sit up straight!” at dinner or at your desk. While it probably felt like she was nagging and just “being mom,” she was trying to help you have a healthier, pain-free future. The loss of proper posture can cause many things including headaches, joint pain, back pain, and more.

So, you may be wondering what you can do differently now that you find yourself slouching in front of your computer, desk, or TV. Here are a few tips to help be more conscious of your posture and begin correcting the issue.

What kind of chair are you sitting in? When you are working at a desk, is your chair “ergonomically” designed for proper posture? In other words, is it comfortable and supportive? If not, talk to your boss about getting a chair that is better designed for you or get a lumbar support cushion to help support your lower back and create the proper sitting position.

Stretch! Get up and stretch! Sitting still for long periods of time can cause you to feel tired and puts extra strain on your spine. Stretching gets your blood flowing again!

Exercise! This does not necessarily mean you need to go to the gym for hours or take classes. There are simple exercises that can strengthen the muscles surrounding your spine so that they become stronger, making it less uncomfortable for you to sit at your desk.
