The Importance of Good Ergonomics at Home

Home is where we feel most at ease, let our hair down, and relax. However, many of the repetitive strain injuries and posture related conditions that we treat regularly at Chiropractic Partners are developed or exacerbated by habits and conditions in the home.

Many of the relaxing activities we engage in at home involve long periods of remaining in the same position. While this may seem counterintuitive, being still, especially in an ergonomically poor position, can cause pain and injuries.

During the current COVID-19 crisis, more people than ever are working from home. While many people are certainly enjoying this change, it can lead to medical problems. Because we tend to feel very at ease at home, we tend to forget good working ergonomics and proper body mechanics, especially while performing desk work from home.

Ergonomics Problems Common with Working at Home

In the workplace, your employer is responsible for ensuring that the environment is safe. However, when working at home, many people make work stations from the furniture they have on hand. All too often, the result is workspaces that are poorly designed and contribute to repetitive motions, postural related symptoms, and other sources of pain.

Forward head posture is one of the most common examples of poor ergonomics. This is frequently the result of an ad hoc work station that incorporates an easy chair, couch, or recliner. It can also result from positioning a computer monitor below the line of sight. During desk work, you should sit upright with your feet on the floor and the keyboard and monitor in the proper position.
