Is Your Child Dealing with Tennis Elbow?

The condition that's known as tennis elbow ordinarily occurs as a result of strenuous and repetitive overuse of the muscle tendons of the forearm. Tennis elbow pain originates along the outside of the elbow.

The most common cause of tennis elbow in kids and teens is playing tennis, racquetball, or similar sports when the use of a racquet is required. At Chiropractic Partners, we effectively treat children for tennis elbow and other sports injuries in the Triangle area.

How Overuse Causes Tennis Elbow

When your child swings a racquet, the muscles in his forearm is repeatedly stretching and contracting. These muscles are used to straighten and raise the arm, hand, and wrist. When these muscles are forced to perform strenuous repetitive motions, the result is inflammation and sometimes microtears in elbow tendons and the superficial surface of the bone of the elbow. Although any athlete can develop a tennis elbow, improper stroke technique when swinging a racquet and cheap equipment can contribute to the injury. Some people even develop the condition through a repetitive motion at their jobs.

How Our Chiropractors Treat Tennis Elbow

Aside from rest, ice, compression, and elevation at home, we recommend a course of active release techniques that we use in our clinics. These techniques are targeted at muscles, tendons, ligaments, and nerves in the affected elbow for a few weeks. Patients report reduced pain and increased functionality during and after treatment. We would likely recommend home stretching exercises after the course of chiropractic treatment.
