Did you  know that Osteoporosis patients can benefit from eating prunes?  Prunes are very underrated as a low-risk, high-benefit part of a great treatment plan for skeletal health!

This information from Chiropractic Economics is shared to us from Dr. Houfek at our Chiropractic Partners Raleigh office in North Hills/Midtown.

Osteoporosis is a disease that thins and weakens the bones. During the growth years, bones elongate, gain mass and increase their hardness.  Throughout adulthood, many factors can change and influence gain or losses.  Some of these factors, such as diet, exercise, medications, etc. will compromise the skeleton, putting it at risk for osteoporosis.

Diet can play an important role! As stated by Hippocrates "Let food be thy medicine, and medicine be thy food" There is one food in particular that is true to this statement...Prunes!  Prunes contain compounds that are known to enhance bone health.  These compounds increase bone formation and decrease bone resorption, which decrease the risk of fracture.

We all know prunes are known for their laxative effect, but they also improve bone metabolism.  Consuming about 100 grams (10-11 prunes) per day can increase bone formation.  If you aren't used to eating prunes, it is best to start with 1-2 per day, then gradually increase until reaching bowel tolerance.

Prunes are a low-risk, high-benefit option for skeletal health.  They should not be considered a complete treatment plan, but can be considered part of your strategy to treat and prevent osteoporosis.
