History

A Proud History

Since 1908, Texas Chiropractic College has been at the forefront of patient-centered health care. Visionary programs. An unwavering commitment to students, service, and professionalism. A keen focus on the future. Taken together, all of these things are a direct result of our rich history and heritage in chiropractic health care.

The fourth-oldest of all chiropractic colleges in the U.S., TCC was founded more than a century ago in San Antonio, Texas. With a strong emphasis on high admission standards, TCC established itself as an innovator through programming that included anatomical instruction by dissection, laboratory instruction in pathology, and training in x-ray and dietary interventions.

In 1965, due to substantial growth, TCC moved from San Antonio to Pasadena, Texas, a suburb of Houston. In 1976, TCC launched the first-of-its-kind Preceptorship Program, offering students a distinctive field practicum experience. In 1985, the College further positioned itself as a first-choice institution when it initiated its Hospital Rotation Program, placing TCC interns together with experts in sports medicine, family medicine, surgeons, orthopedists, and neurosurgeons in area hospitals, including the world-renowned Texas Medical Center.

TCC’s growth continued through the first decade of the 21st Century as the College’s ambitious plan to expand facilities saw the construction of five new buildings during a 10-year period. These facilities included a major change to the clinic experience with the Ligon Building, home of the Campus Health Clinic, and the Moody Health Center, where chiropractic interns in their final year at TCC work under the guidance of attending clinicians to treat the general public.

The most recent new construction project on campus, Dr. Yasunori Iwama Education Center, was completed in 2006, and is heralded as one of the finest facilities in chiropractic education. This 35,000-square-foot facility features the 4,000-square-foot Assessment Center that has been acclaimed as the most innovative in the country, classrooms, 45 faculty offices, and the 750-seat Elliott Auditorium.

Not just investing in facilities, TCC continues to invest in providing the best faculty to educate future chiropractors. The faculty are not just teaching in the classroom at TCC… They are engaged with the student body. They are active in service to the chiropractic profession and their own fields of expertise. They are participating in multiple areas of research. And many continue to expand their own knowledge base through the pursuit of additional degrees and certifications.

Texas Chiropractic College’s strong history provides the solid foundation for current growth in health care and supports a clear vision for the future.
