Herniated Disc

Herniated Disc Treatment from Our Chiropractor in Clearwater

A herniated disc is an injury that can cause pain and numbness throughout the body.  This injury can be debilitating, but can easily be treated with chiropractic care.  Below, let's take a closer look at herniated disc injuries and learn how a chiropractor can help.

.

What Is a Herniated Disc?

The spine is made up of several small bones, called vertebra.  In between each vertebra is a small disc structure.  This disc is donut shaped, and filled with a soft, jelly-like substance.  The discs work to cushion your movements, absorbing the shock from bending and moving.  As people age, the walls of these discs can become thin and brittle, making them more prone to cracking.  If the disc walls become damaged, some of the internal material can escape.  This is a herniated disc.

What Are Herniated Disc Symptoms?

The symptoms of a herniated disc will vary depending on the severity of the injury and the location of the damaged disc.  Herniated discs in the upper spine or neck will cause pain and numbness in the shoulders, arms, and hands.  Damaged discs in the lower spine will impact the buttocks, legs, and feet.  Pain can range from a dull ache, to a stabbing, severe pain.  Numbness and tingling are also associated with this injury, commonly felt throughout the extremities. People often report feeling more clumsy than usual, and may find themselves tripping more often, or dropping objects more frequently.

How Can a Chiropractor Help?

A chiropractor works to restore balance to the body by restoring the intricate balance between the skeleton and muscles.  Often in herniated disc injuries, undue stress is applied to the damaged disc, preventing the disc from fully healing.  Chiropractic care offers an effective, safe, and non-invasive treatment option for herniated disc injuries.  A chiropractor has several tools at his or her disposal to help naturally heal injuries.  A chiropractor may use manual manipulation, massage therapy, physical therapy, or electro stimulation to help treat injuries.  A full evaluation of your injury will determine the right course of treatment.  Our practice treats each patient as an individual and will customize your treatment plan to get you healing faster.
