Facet Joint

Joint disorders can affect nearly any joint in the body, but are especially common within the joints of the spine, known as facet joints. These joints are located in pairs in between each vertebra and allow the spine to move smoothly. Facet joints can be damaged as a result of trauma or long-term degeneration, and may cause pain, stiffness, headaches and difficulty moving. These disorders can be effectively treated through chiropractic care and other alternative treatment methods.

Between each pair of vertebrate are two facet joints. These joints are covered by articular cartilage, which allows the bones to smoothly slide on each other. The joints are furthers surrounded by a small capsule that further lubricates the joint. Over time, extra pressure on the facet joints causes bone spurs to develop, which wear down the cartilage. Once the cartilage degenerates, bone rubs against bone causing the joints to inflame and swell.
