Interferential Pain Block

Interferential Therapy (IFT) is usually incorporated into a physical therapy treatment program and is one of the ways to stimulate soft tissue healing. This electrical stimulation technique uses alternating high and mid-frequency electrical signals to treat muscle spasms, strains and tissue damage, such as plantar fasciitis.

During the treatment, superficial electrodes are placed on the skin around the area of pain. An alternating electrical current is used to penetrate and stimulate the tissue and nerves to promote relaxation of the excitable nerve tissue.

It is similar, in theory, to the traditional use of alternating cold and hot packs to bring more blood to the injured area.

The current has a massaging effect, stimulating the production of endorphins, the body's natural painkillers,

IFT is used to:

Stimulate muscles
Increase blood flow
Relieve pain
Reduce swelling
Activate cell function

The process can result in improved range of movement (ROM), reduction of pain, and increased healing time.

IFT is an effective treatment for:

Shingles
Fibromyalgia
Low back pain
Sciatica
Osteoarthritis
Incontinency
Muscle spasms

Interferential therapy treatment is just as effective as other types of electronic stimulation and is described as more comfortable by most patients.

It is also effective in relieving, and, in some cases, eliminating chronic pain.
