Sacroiliac Joint Misalignment

Sacroiliac Joint Dysfunction (SI Joint Pain)

SI Joint Left Hip (Backward)

Sacroiliac joint misalignment may cause severe pain throughout the hips and legs, which is often worse while walking, standing or running. This may occur as a result of trauma to the hips or pregnancy, which can cause the pelvis to expand and bones to become misaligned.

Effective treatment for this condition can often be achieved through conservative methods such as spinal manipulation, physiotherapy, massage and nonsurgical decompression. Your doctor will decide which treatment is best for you after evaluating your condition. It is important to treat this condition thoroughly to prevent permanent damage and degeneration to the hip.

When the left hip is positioned slightly backward in relation to the right hip, additional stress is placed on the sacroiliac joint, which can cause the cartilage that covers the bones to degenerate. This imbalance also causes increased irritation and degeneration to the hip.

SI Joint Left Hip (Forward)

The sacroiliac joint connects the spine to the pelvis and is essential to carrying weight throughout the body, although the joint itself does not move much. This condition can be treated through spinal adjustments performed on the pelvis, stretching of the lower back and hamstring muscles and proper posture exercises. These conservative treatments aim to restore proper alignment to the joint while relieving pain and allowing the patient to function properly once again.

When the left hip is positioned slightly forward in relation to the right hip, movement in the hip can cause the iliac bone to press against the sciatic nerve, resulting in pain that can be felt in the lower back, buttocks, back of the thigh, calf or foot.

SI Joint Right Hip (Backward)

When the right hip is positioned slightly backward in relation to the left hip, additional stress is placed on the sacroiliac joint, which can cause the cartilage that covers the bones to degenerate.

This imbalance places additional weight on the lower hip and sacroiliac joint that can cause irritation and pain.

SI Joint Open Hips

When both hips are out of place, excess pressure may be placed on the sacroiliac joint, causing pain throughout the hips and legs. This condition may occur as a result of degeneration of the joint or from pregnancy that causes the pelvis to expand and become misaligned.

Treatment for pain caused by open hips focuses on relieving symptoms through rest, ice and anti-inflammatory medication and also on correcting the misalignment through chiropractic care or surgery.

When both hips are slightly open, additional stress is placed on the sacroiliac joint. This additional stress causes joint irritation, inflammation and pain.
