Kyphosis

Kyphosis is a condition that causes the spine to curve dramatically forward, resulting in a slouched posture, back pain and spinal stiffness. This condition may occur as a result of a developmental disorder, degenerative diseases such as arthritis or osteoporosis, or trauma to the spine. It may affect patients of all ages but is most common in adolescents, older adults and patients with connective tissue disorders.

Treatment for kyphosis depends on the type and severity of the condition. Many cases improve on their own, while others may require bracing or surgery. Anti-inflammatory medication and physical therapy exercises can help relieve pain and other symptoms for all cases of kyphosis.

Kyphosis occurs when there is an exaggerated curvature in the thoracic spine which causes the face to be slightly forward and the shoulders to be hunched.
