Orthopedics in at S.M.A.R.T. Spine Institute and Surgery Center in Arcadia

At S.M.A.R.T. Spine Institute & Surgery Center, we are proud to offer patients a range of orthopedic surgery procedures to meet your specific needs.

Orthopedic surgery involves the treatment of injuries, diseases and degeneration of the bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles and nerves. All of these structures allow patients to move, work and enjoy an active lifestyle.

Our Arcadia orthopedic surgeons, physical therapists and athletic trainers use the latest innovative techniques and technology–from diagnosis through rehabilitation–to help you get you back to your daily routine as quickly as can be. Diseased or damaged structures can cause pain, weakness and significantly impact a person’s daily life. Surgery is often performed on patients with severe conditions or those that do not respond to conservative treatment, and may include repairing or replacing damaged structures in order to relieve pain and other symptoms.

After surgery, patients will often need to undergo a course of physiotherapy in order to restore a full range of motion to the joint. Most patients experience significant relief from pain and other symptoms after surgery and are able to return to work and enjoy a higher quality of life. Dr. Eberly also helps patients develop a customized plan to prevent future damage to the treated area and keep symptoms from recurring.

Arthroscopic Shoulder & Knee Surgery

Arthroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure that allows your doctor to diagnose and treat joint conditions through small incisions in the skin. During this procedure, a thin fiberoptic light, magnifying lens and tiny camera are inserted into the problem area, allowing your doctor to examine the joint in great detail. This method offers patients many advantages as well, including less bleeding, less scarring and faster recovery times. Sports injuries can often be treated through arthroscopy, as well as tendon tears, torn cartilage or ligaments, inflamed joint lining and loose bone or cartilage. Tendon tears in the knee and rotator cuff tears are among the most common types of arthroscopic surgery.

Carpal Tunnel Surgery

Carpal tunnel surgery, known as carpal tunnel release, is an outpatient procedure performed to relieve pressure on the median nerve and reduce the symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome. This procedure can help restore muscle strength and dexterity, and is typically performed on patients who have had persistent symptoms that do not respond to conservative treatment methods. Carpal tunnel release can be performed endoscopically or through an open procedure. The open procedure involves a two-inch incision but gives the surgeon a better view of the treated area, while endoscopic surgery involves two tiny incisions and offers patients less post-operative pain and the ability to return to work more quickly. Most patients report significant relief from symptoms after this procedure.

Knee Reconstruction

Arthritis and certain knee injuries and diseases can damage the cartilage that normally cushions the knee joint, leading to pain and stiffness. A knee reconstruction or replacement may be recommended when more conservative treatments, such as anti-inflammatory medications and cortisone injections, fail to relieve symptoms. During knee replacement, the entire knee joint is replaced with an artificial prosthesis, offering patients immediate relief from joint pain. Knee reconstruction involves removing a part of the knee, most commonly the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), and replacing it with a graft from another part of the leg. Both procedures require physiotherapy to ensure a full recovery.

Hand Surgery

Hand surgery involves the treatment of conditions affecting the hand, wrist and forearm, including carpal tunnel syndrome, wrist pain, sports injuries and others. The hands are essential to helping us eat, dress, work and do many other daily activities. In order to perform these activities, our hands require proper functioning of the tendons, muscles and other structures. When problems arise in any of these structures, surgery may be required. Hand surgery may involve tendon repair, nerve repair, skin grafts, drainage of cysts, or closed reduction and fixation. The procedure will be customized to treat the patient’s individual condition. Hand surgery is performed on an outpatient basis and involves a short recovery time before patients can return to work and other regular activities.
